Ahead of the European elections, MEPs and national MPs will discuss women’s power in politics during an inter-parliamentary committee meeting on Thursday.
MEPs and more than 20 MPs from 15 EU national parliaments and Norway will attend this meeting marking International Women’s Day (IWD).
The programme includes an opening speech by EP Vice-President and Chair of the High-level group on Gender Equality and Diversity Dimitrios Papadimoulis, a keynote speech by Croatia’s President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic and a welcome speech by Gender Equality Commissioner Vera Jourová. Mrs. Grabar-Kitarovic will hold a press point outside the meeting room at around 10.00.
The conference will then split into two debates:
The real power of women in politics and how to boost it; and
Young women in politics.
Closing remarks will be delivered by EU foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, and Women’s Rights Committee Vice-Chair, João Pimenta Lopes.

Seminar for journalists
On Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 March, the EP press service will hold a seminar for journalists on the same topic. Participants will include EP Vice-President Dimitrios Papadimoulis, the Director of the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), Virginija Langbakk, and representatives from current EP political groups. The seminar will include three panels: ‘‘What is still needed to break the glass ceiling in politics once and for all?’’, ‘‘European elections: what will women vote for?’’ and ‘‘European elections: what do the political groups offer to women on gender balance and women’s empowerment’’.
